SRV at “Christopher Moon”

Christopher Moon was a little known bar on Lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas. 1980.  There were not 10 people in attendance that night.  The band almost cancelled the gig. This was before Stevie used any effects or even a tremolo bar.  Just #1 and Fender Amps.

“Brothers Vaughan” Stevie & Jimmie at Nick’s Uptown

The Blues Venue at the time in Dallas “Nick’s Upton” on Greenville Avenue.  Everybody played there.  Muddy Waters, Albert King, Albert Collins.  On this particular night Stevie Ray and Double Trouble opened for the Fabulous Thunderbirds.  Stevie is playing Jimmie’s white Strat and Jimmie is playing a new Fender Reissue Strat just released by Fender.  Keith Ferguson is in the background playing his Precision Bass.

Tricks

I took this picture at a club in Tulsa, Oklahoma named “Boston Street Market”  Like many of Stevie’s early gigs, it was not heavily attended.  No more than 25 people there for 3 sets. He always played behind his head during the solo  part of the song “Lovestruck” which he is doing here.  This shot has been published several times including the promo poster for the box set that Sony released a few years back.

“Trio”

Stevie and Double Trouble posed for very few photos. I shot a roll of film this day at “The Bottom Line” in NYC during sound check for promo use.  None of the shots ever made  the grade but this was always one of my favorites.

Lago

Stevie had lived in numerous places in Austin in the late ’70′s and early 80′s.  During the middle of my  employment by the band Stevie decided that he wanted to rent a house on Lake Travis.  It was  in an area named Volente Beach. I accompanied him and Lenny that day and we ambled upon this old fiberglass boat. Vaughan had good taste in vehicles and watercraft. By the way,  “lago” means lake.

“Bendin”

I took this shot at Nick’s Uptown in Dallas, Texas.  Nick’s hosted many of Stevie’s influences. Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, Albert King to name a few. I call this picture “Bendin” because bending the heavy strings on Number One was no easy task.  Stevie used GHS strings ranging from 13 to 60 gauge.

Lenny

Stevie performing Lenny on the now famous Lenny guitar. I bought this guitar at a pawn shop on Jefferson Blvd. in Oak Cliff(Dallas) in 1980 for $375. It sold a few years back at Eric Clapton’s benefit auction for $585K. It is a 1964 modified finish Fender Stratocaster. Seen here with original neck. A year or 2 later, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top gave Stevie an after market maple neck which Stevie put on. When Fender replicated the guitar recently in limited number they made it with maple neck. This rare shot was taken at Al’s Bamboo Room in the Oak Lawn section of Dallas. Stevie only played the song Lenny during encores and always sitting down.

3 Thirty 5

1958 Afghan Green 335 loaned to Stevie by a fan for 10 years.  That’s right, he loaned it to him for 10 years. Not a gift. All I know is that when Stevie cut loose on the B.B. King covers it was good stuff. Notice the fancy stage lighting. Cheatam Street Warehouse in  San Marcos, Texas..y’all.

Floodin

Stevie getting after it during a solo while performing Texas Flood. This was at a little club in San Antonio, Texas named Skip Willy’s. Maybe 20 people there that night. 1981. Band still played 3, 45 minute sets with encore. These were the good old days.

Mr. King

Albert King in session with his band and Stevie Ray Vaughan in Toronto, Canada at a live recording for a local TV station. Now out on CD.  Argueably Stevie’s biggest influence. Shaking Albert’s hand was like shaking someones foot..thick. He didn’t change guitars. He just played this custom Flying V with his name in the neck. He was a special person and a great performer.

King Session

I took several shots during this studio session in Toronto Canada. Stevie playing with Albert King and his band for a TV show in Toronto. Recently released on CD and DVD. Albert was one of, if not Stevie’s biggest influences.  Stevie is playing his 1962 Fiesta Red Stratocaster.
